▪ SsangYong to expand global sales by focusing on efficient production system and global launch of G4 Rexton
SsangYong Motor Company (CEO Choi Johng-sik; www.kg-mobility.com/en), part of the Mahindra Group, today announced that the company sold a total of 11,413 units in July 2017 – 8,658 units in domestic sales and 2,755 in exports.
SsangYong’s July sales decreased by 10.7% from a year earlier due to the reduction in exports despite its domestic sales growth of 14.7% based on the popularity of the Tivoli brand and newly launched G4 Rexton (export name: Rexton).
In the domestic market, the Tivoli brand and G4 Rexton led the company’s sales growth by securing the No. 1 spot in the compact SUV market and large SUV market respectively. Driven by these models, the company’s July domestic sales jumped by 14.7% year-on-year and 6.7% on an accumulated basis.
The Tivoli brand, including Tivoli which has recently been upgraded to Tivoli Armour and Tivoli Air, led domestic sales growth despite the cut-throat competition in the compact SUV market.
The Tivoli Armour has been introduced to the market last month with a brand-new design and improved product competitiveness over the previous Tivoli. A special custom-built Gear Edition received a favorable response from the market, in fact its bookings accounted for 30% of the total Tivoli Armour bookings.
SsangYong’s July exports dropped by 47.4% compared to the same month last year. However, it witnessed a steady recovery as the exports increased by 27.4% compared to the previous month.
Meanwhile, SsangYong is accelerating its efforts in promoting the brand-new G4 Rexton through various marketing events such as the G4 Rexton Trans-Eurasia Trail, a global grand-scale test-drive event passing through 23 cities in 8 countries.
The G4 Rexton will be introduced to the European market at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, Frankfurt, Germany in September, and then its launch event will be held in the U.K.
Since the G4 Rexton is scheduled to be shipped from August, the company expects its global sales will gradually expand.
Choi Johng-sik, CEO of SsangYong Motor Company, commented, “Tivoli brand and G4 Rexton have led our sales growth by holding the lead in the compact SUV and large SUV markets respectively, adding, “We will increase our global sales through the efficient production system amid cooperative labor-management relations based on a strike-free wage agreement for the first time in the Korean automotive industry.”
